Commercial Energy Audits in Chicago
The purpose of an energy audit is to identify building performance problems and make suggestions to eliminate those problems and reduce your energy costs. Different levels of auditing provide a varying potential for cost savings.
A Level I audit, or basic building walk-through, is the starting point for HVAC energy optimization. We review your property’s utility bill history and briefly assess the building and its systems. The primary objective of a Level I audit is to provide you with low- to no-cost energy conservation measures that you can implement immediately.
A Level II audit includes a more thorough site survey and energy use analysis. We benchmark your building’s performance to gauge its overall performance compared to similar nearby buildings. We break down your energy consumption by end use so you can understand which areas of operation stand to benefit the most from energy conservation measures.
A Level III audit is a study of your building’s energy use over time, involving long-term data collection through your building management system. This high-level audit is typically reserved for complex commercial and industrial properties where specific economic payback analysis is required.

HVAC Optimization for Commercial Buildings
It’s one thing to assess your building’s energy use and determine ways you can save – it’s a whole other thing to implement those suggestions and watch as potential energy savings become reality. At Murphy & Miller, we help you every step of the way, from recommending HVAC optimization techniques to installing HVAC energy management systems to measuring and verifying energy savings after you make these improvements.
With a more efficient HVAC system, you may qualify for utility rebates with ComEd, Nicor, Peoples Gas, North Shore Gas, and DCEO. We’ll help you understand what rebates are available and how to apply.
DDC Controls and HVAC Energy Management Systems
Direct digital controls (DDC) are a type of building automation system. While HVAC system optimization is one of the most useful functions of building automation, DDC controls are often tied to many other building systems, including fire suppression equipment, security, and lighting. DDC controls can collect energy usage data; monitor equipment for maintenance needs; control heating, cooling, and lighting schedules; and identify trouble with security or life safety systems.
The ability to monitor and adjust all building functions from one control station is incredibly convenient. It also creates the opportunity to complete a Level III energy audit and optimize your energy consumption over time. At Murphy & Miller, we want to help you run your business efficiently, which is why we install DDC controls and building management systems in commercial and industrial buildings throughout Chicago.
